Whew! It's been too log since I've posted. Forgive me for the hiatus, but life does get crazy when you're trying to change the world! :-)
Let me ask you a question: How do ribbons and "disabilities" relate to each other? Read on to find out...
Many of you know that this month is a BIG deal for the Diverse Ability community. Tomorrow, July 12th, NYC is hosting the First Annual Disability Pride Parade. On July 26th, we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act! I want to briefly share my thoughts.
I'm glad that people with Diverse Abilities will march tomorrow, reminding people that we are here. I'm excited that the march will culminate with performances by DiversAble musicians, DiversAble comedians, and other acts. Yet, I'm also concerned... Just like with all groups of people, there is always opposition, always another group with something negative to say. Then there's the other side, the side where people feel pity. I'm cool with sympathy, even empathy, but not so much pity. I do have "disability pride." I'll never deny that my limitations have helped me develop strength of character, creativity, determination, and perseverance. I'm even prouder of my ability!
My hope for tomorrow's parade is two-fold:
1. People will celebrate the accomplishments, strengths, and ability of those with Diverse Abilities
2. People will become aware and/or appreciate that there is still a long way to go in regards to equality. True equality is not created through pen & paper, but through a change in attitudes, perceptions, and mindsets.
Now to answer the question of ribbons and "disabilities..." There is a ribbon color to represent almost every Diverse Ability out there! Check out this link for a look at a pretty solid list, though not an exhaustive one: http://www.disabled-world.com/disability/awareness/ribbons.php
CHALLENGE: 1) Find a ribbon that represents you!
2) Go to http://bitly.com/AbilityPride and order any piece that has your ribbon color (our Birthstone Studs are perfect for this and super affordable, see image below)
3) Shout out on social media that you accept the challenge using #DMPChallenge, say the color you chose, and post the link for the jewelry you order (please tag me!)
PRIZE: Everyone who places an order by Monday will have a chance to win all Hostess rewards (message me if you don't know what this means!)
ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS CHALLENGE WILL GO TOWARDS THE DIVERSABLE MODEL PROJECT!
