Tuesday Truth - DiversAble Models in the Workplace

Let's face it, finding a job these days is quite a feat for everyone! Try adding a very visible, physical Diverse Ability and you've got a mountain to climb.

I want to run today's Tuesday Truth as a real Q & A session, so I will answer ALL your questions regarding my experience as a person with Diverse Abilities in the workplace until 11:59pm tonight!! No question is stupid and if you're thinking it, there are at least 100 other people wondering the same thing... If you are unable to post your question directly on the blog, then please post it in the comments on Facebook or email me at amanda.frantz21@gmail.com! I'll be re-posting your questions and my replies here for everyone to see!!

Every person who asks a question will be entered into a raffle to be drawn at Midnight!! The prize is unbeatable ;-)

READY, SET, ASK!

  1. Have you ever been rejected a job opportunity because of your diverse abilities? You were completely qualified for the job but you weren't chosen solely because of your abilities? I know rejection is hard for everyone.. Does it make you want to work ten times harder when you find another place you would like to work?

    1. Great question, though tricky to answer. My initial instinct is to say yes, but I have no way of proving this. Legally, I should be able to take an organization to court if I don't get a job I'm qualified for. However, it is almost impossible to prove that I was rejected due to my Diverse Ability. Legally, employers aren't allowed to ask me anything about my disability and they have the right to say they simply found a more suitable candidate. It does make me want to work harder, but I truly believe that what God has for someone no one can take away! Since my faith is so strong, I go in and interview the best I can knowing that what is for me, will be mine.

  2. This world can be a terrible place to live in with people and their thoughts/attitudes against others. I know you told me once about dealing with others who are surprised by ethnicity. How do you handle comments for your diverse ability?

    1. In the workplace, people are never direct with their questions or comments (for legal purposes), but they do hint. I've had employers ask questions like, "What do you think would be the most challenging thing for you on this job?" or "Please be transparent about your ability to do this job." In the moment, I respond politely, though I do sometimes feel offended. I often chalk it up to ignorance ;-)
